We returned to east London with a project located on St Mark’s Rise, tucked back from the hustle and bustle of Dalston. Here, we restored 3 apartments within a characterful existing building.

We’ve focused on preserving the existing historical features within the apartments, while bringing the building’s fabric up to today’s Building Regulations. We’ve installed a new roof, added insulation and replaced the timber sash windows like-for-like (only now they are double-glazed and energy efficient).

After learning about the building’s history and link to garment trade of east London, the designers at Scenesmith stitched an industrial thread throughout the interior concepts. Plywood kitchens handcrafted locally by Lozi feature solid walnut handles and a rich burgundy worktop by Fenix. In the bathrooms, we bordered rows of shimmering matchstick tiles with ceramic bands, mimicking the woven thread of fabric (paired with a beautiful terrazzo). We exposed the roof joists within the first floor apartments, creating oversized 3.6m-high ceilings.

For those who like what Artform do but love period properties, the St Mark’s Rise apartments were a unique chance to have the best of both worlds.

While the apartments are all sold, we’re also building a 3-bedroom lateral home and a commercial space in the courtyard. Click here to find out more.
